The color wheel is very important to flower designers and we covered some of the basics in the last article. Color wheels are very useful to understanding the relationship between colors. This article will cover how to find different color combinations that work well together in floral arrangements.

The simplest way of using color is to use only a single color, known as a monochromatic theme. An arrangement of red roses or white calla lilies is simple and beautiful. A combination of lilies, roses, and snapdragons, all in yellow is bright and refreshing. Monochromatic themes emphasize the form and texture of the flowers. When done well, flower bouquets created with this theme can be quite elegant.

A monochromatic theme can include the use of only one shade or hue but can incorporate the lighter variation of the color, called a tint, and darker variations of the color, called shades. Colors are selected from the same segment on the color wheel but closer to either the center or the edge of the wheel. If you chose red as the main color you could use flowers with varying shades of red, such as pink and deep red.

Another way to select colors is to use of colors that are analogous. Analogous colors are from different segments of the color wheel, but have the same level of color intensity. Pick a color from the wheel and incorporate a color directly to the left or right. The choices would be different colors but the same intensity. This theme creates flowers arrangements that are soothing and harmonious.

The colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel are called complementary colors. They and can also be used to create some beautiful arrangements. Red and green are complementary as are yellow and violet and orange and blue. Complementary flower arrangements offer intensity and contrast.

Many designers will use 3 colors which are proportionately distanced on the wheel. These are known as triad color schemes. For example a flower arrangement might contain three primary colors to produce a floral design that is effervescent, intense and alive. Just remember these colors should be evenly spaced on their respective segments of the color wheel.

Thousands of different color combinations are possible. The results include a wide range of emotions from subtle, soothing, and elegant to bold, vibrant, stimulating and energetic and everything in between. To make the process even more interesting, there are hundreds of flowers in a wide array of shapes and colors. Together these choices provide a flower designer an almost endless array of possibilities

The myriad combinations of flower types and colors makes flower arranging both science and art in one. Keep in mind though that you want the colors to invoke a particular mood in the person who is going to be the recipient of the arrangement. A color wheel will make the whole process of flower arranging easier and can help you to produce the emotional response desired.
